Motion:

“That ICPA Qld lobbies the Department of Education (DoE) to thoroughly communicate all aspects of PTT (permission to teach) roles with PTT teachers including rural/remote teaching service time and access to a permanent teaching position once graduated.”

Explanation:

PTT teachers start their teaching career while they are still studying to receive their degree. PPT teachers are a valuable resource for the department, they are filling the gaps where a fully qualified teacher cannot be found. These PTT teachers are uprooting their families and moving to our rural/remote towns to provide this service. Only to find out once they get there that their rural/remote teaching service time only starts once they’ve graduated (meaning they may need to do extra time in that location).

Once a PTT teacher has started at a location the department should offer the PTT teacher in the location a permanent position (if available) once graduated and not allow a teacher wanting to transfer in to take that position from the PTT teacher if both the school and PTT teacher are happy to continue working together. The department needs to communicate all the expectations clearly to PTT teachers to support them in their new roles before they accept a position.
